I want follow all the rules I was just seeing if there was any that hire with permit so I would have a job line up when done with school

We need some clarification on what it is that Cowboy wants.

It sounds to me like he wants to get hired for a driving job while only having a permit. I don't know of any situation where companies hire people who only hold a permit.

Honestly, it sounds very much like he doesn't want to follow the new rules and go through the training requirements so he can get a CDL.

Help us out Cowboy! Am I understanding what you want?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Thanks for the reply.

Here's how it works. They won't hire you until you have your CDL. I think that is what's confusing you. The companies who provide Paid CDL Training Programs will pay your transportation to their facility, feed you, and house you for free while you are there. Once you pass their training program they help get you to a place where you must pass the state driving test. After passing that, you are then hired, and spend some one on one time with a company trainer. At that point you are working and getting paid while living in a truck with your trainer.

That's a short version explanation. All of them require some sort of a commitment from you. They will want you to sign a contractual agreement that you will work for them for a designated time period. Most commonly that will be one year. Click on that link I provided above. That gets you to a list of companies that you should be applying to.

A while back I spoke with Wilson Logistics.

Basically once you have your permit, they put you through their school. Once you pass their school, you get your CDL and automatically get a job through them.

Work with them for a year (so I recall) and you owe nothing for your training.

I'm saying Wilson but many companies have programs like this. You have a permit, they put you into their school, you come out of school with your CDL and a job with them.

Maybe someone else can chime in here but I was told that a permit is only good for six months. So that's something to be aware of.

Now if that six months passes, I'm not sure what happens.

I believe every state is different, but some allow you to renew it, might be just once I'm not sure, for a fee. After that or so many renewals you need to retest again. Sorry for a half-answer! That's just what I recall when I was researching that phase.

Yes I agree with Old School, in order to get your actual CDL license you have to first get a permit, just like getting your drive license when you turned 16-you had to first get a learners permit and that’s the same thing as a Class A CDL Permit.

In order to get your actual CDL license you need to go through either a company paid CDL school or go through a private CDL school.

There are pros and cons with private CDL school and Company paid CDL school.

But no they won’t hire you with just a CDL Permit.
