I’m going to a Lineman school and they require a DOT physical for a Class A CDL. I’m only 18. My doctors office does this exam and they have a positive test for THC from a year ago in my medical record when I was in high school. The medical exam form asks about illegal drug use in the last 2 years. I no longer smoke weed but am worried I won’t pass the exam because of this question. My doctor at this same clinic also prescribes me Adderall for my ADHD. I only take it for school. He’s not the one doing the exam. Should I be worried about this? What can I do? I really want to be able to do this lineman job and I need the Class A permit to attend the school. They provide the actual training. Please advise.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Ask the administrators at the school about it. It’s better to have to wait a bit then to disqualify yourself permanently.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Josh, tell the complete truth on the DOT form. It is better to tell the truth and face the consequences now because if you don’t the truth will eventually come out and then you will have “lying” added to your record.

There are no ways to bypass your past actions. Just be honest and forthright with everyone involved in your process, accept personal responsibility and try to explain yourself if given the opportunity.

Good luck, young man. I hope things will still work out for you.

Hi, Josh. Can you clarify something please, if you don't mind? You mentioned you need to pass the same DOT physical as a Class A CDL holder would need to pass. But you didn't mention if you needed to get an actual CDL license.

I’m going to a Lineman school and they require a DOT physical for a Class A CDL.

At the end you said you need a class A Permit to attend the school.

I really want to be able to do this lineman job and I need the Class A permit to attend the school.

It's a little unclear as to whether you need to earn your CDL or if you just have to have a permit.

@RealDiehl: Linemen need a class A for the times their Class B trucks need to pull a heavy pole trailer (more than 10,000 GVWR).

I have taught those classes. The shorter truck + trailer combination is waaay easier to do the skills!

GVWR:

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

GVWR is the maximum operating weight of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer, minus any trailers.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Thanks, Errol! Like I said I wasn't sure bc of how it was worded. I'm glad you cleared that up.

Sounded like the med exam that tested THC postitive was when you legally were still a minor? Not sure if that counts, aside from the question on 2 years prior. hmmmm Very Good Luck
