Laura, what were the circumstances that required such a long bobtail? And how was the ride for you in bobtail mode?
Bruce,
Have you run across I-40 lately in Arizona and New Mexico? OMG! If my company ever has me bobtail across there again, I will refuse! Between the wind and the bad roads I was bounced everywhere and my lower back is killing me. I picked up my container and then didn't have much time left, so I turned around and parked 20 miles away. Even in that 20 miles, what a difference a load makes on a truck. My company sent five of us as bobtails the same distance, on the instruction of ONE (Ocean Network Express).
SeaBoard Foods in Guymon OK has gotten rid of their containers which were pulled by lease operators. They have stated they will fill 75% regular 53 ft reefers and only 25% will be containers now. One of our drivers that took an empty to Liberal and was early, was sent down to Guymon where he spent the day shuttling bad containers to a repair shop and bringing five good ones back to the plant. There was several dozen empty cans in a back lot. I still wish I would have brought an empty to go to Liberal or Dodge City, but ONE said no and they were paying for the trip.
Gotta shower, fuel and roll... headed back to the Port of Oakland. One month left at this company. Not sure what I will do when I'm done
Laura
"Bobtailing" means you are driving a tractor without a trailer attached.
A refrigerated trailer.
One way - 1327 miles.

Next time if you really want to have some fun, try doing it in a single axle day cab. 😃
A tractor which does not have a sleeper berth attached to it. Normally used for local routes where drivers go home every night.

It shouldn't be too bad a ride BK least it's just 1 way lol Like our 1200 mile, Miami-San Antonio return trip bobtail , wasn't bad at all. In our 2020 Cascadia, once ya get over the initial shock, it's kinda cool actually, ya can stop anywhere like Wal-Marts etc to get your grub on, etc.
