Hi Cat, Thats an excellent question. Many of us have gone both routes, but we generally recommend company sponsored or provided training for a variety of reasons. Here are some links for information on the site, complete with reviews of companies that provide training and CDL services as well as the path to getting it including starting from the decision to go into trucking.
Id also recommend checking out the CDL diaries section here. There are lots of folks here that can tell you about which company they went through and what the particulars were like at the time.

Companies that invest in you with financing are interested in your success (yes, and a return on their investment). You still need to take your new job seriously, but I started with Swift's school, and I had no out-of-pocket till I started getting Swift paychecks. And then (this was seven years ago) I actually had to pay just a bit over $1,00 for the whole training thing. This is one example from another time, but you might check into the details of any "paid training" company.
Look hard, there are some companies that will pay you to go to CDL training.

Hello,
I started with FFE, I am still a brand new truck driver, just over one month experience with a class A, I was a class B trainer/driver in my former job. The academy at FFE is OK, but is not that good from my own perspective, there are some good trainers. However, there are others that leave much to be desired and seemed that they are there without any concise methodology to teach. If you drive there they would reimburse you for the gas that was put on your vehicle and you would need a receipt. I would not encourage nor discourage someone to attend FFE academy, my advice is to make your own research and choose wisely.
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

I am just getting started with finding a program that works for me, and I know absolutely NOTHING about any of the ins and outs of cdl schools, is it better to wait and search for a funding source or just jump in to a paid training company? I am so eager to get started but I have no one to turn to for guidance. I am a 56 yr old female. (if that matters at all!) thank you Cat
