Hi Tom,
You should call up Prime and speak w/ a recruiter, especially since Prime's a company you're looking at. They'll be able to point you in the right direction if they can't answer your question. I have a pre-hire from Prime and my particular recruiter was very helpful. Certain medical conditions are acceptable if they're currently being treated, e.g. sleep apnea. Something to consider is if this is a Prime requirement or a DOT requirement.
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.
In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.
It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.
We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.
The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.
Maverick, I agree with Bill. You'll have to speak with Prime directly about the condition. Often times a company will approve a condition with a doctor's note or if it's being treated with proper medications or what have you. Sometimes not. But this is quite specific so you'll have to get information straight from the company.
This isn't something I've ever heard of before so I don't think it's a DOT regulation. This sounds like a company policy.

I think it comes more from an insurance stand point. I am sure you are well aware of what can happen if you get a blood clot at the very worst possible time and the insurance companies also know what can happen. I guess the risk of the worst case is not a financial risk they are willing to take.
Well...Prime isn't the only game in town !!!!! Theres alot of other companies out there. I agree, that Prime is a great company...but don't get stuck on one.....

I was looking at the qualifications on the website for Prime Inc and noticed they have a statement that says "No current clinical diagnosis of:" and one of the line items is "Thrombosis (blood clots)". so my question is this, I was diagnosed with this condition back in 2011 and am currently on Coumadin (a blood thinner) for this and will be for the rest of my life. That being said I have not had any issues with this condition. My question is will this prevent me from being able to become a professional driver? thanks in advance...
