I always figured they just got scrapped. Our shop has one they took everything off the underside and have it sitting on the concrete they use as storage. My father in law took an old dry van and used it to create a bridge over the creek at his moms house. He pulled it down there then got the axle and landing fear removed and dragged it across the creek.
I would think using a reefer to keep yourself cool would be expensive if you're using diesel.

There ya go, the Gov. could set up a "Reefer Village", out in the boonies somewhere, taken the illegals there and let em live there off grid. Not in fancy NY hotels with every amenity for free, our OWN homeless people cannot get!! And look how that's turned out pfffft
Same as with any military base ever shut down, they coulda' put the homeless in those houses/dorms. Dunno what they ever did do with the San Diego Naval Base after closing that huge facility (my old boot camp)

This is kind of a weird thing, but I was told that south of the border reefer trailers are used as living quarters by people. I actually think this is a “cool” idea and I wonder if anyone has knowledge of this practice?
I can see that this could be a great alternative for housing in places with no electricity for air conditioning.
So, where do decommissioned reefer trailers go for retirement?
