Sir Old School speaks:

I learned a lot from them about being passionate about what you do.

Well said. That is what keeps me going - Passion for what I do, too. I was 63 years old when I signed on here, and I still am powered by my passion to help new drivers get CDLs. And I'm in good company.

Old School, I hear that the second million is easier to make than the first. Open roads....

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Well, today our terminal manager sent me a photo of my million miler truck. Apparently it showed up today. Here's what he sent me.

I have no idea when I'll be moving in. I seldom go to the terminal, but I guess I'll have to make arrangements sometime soon.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

I see it’s a Volvo. Was that your choice or what Knight chose for you? Did you get to spec it out for yourself? What specific features about the Volvo do you like?

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

We choose the type of truck and the color. The company makes all the other decisions. I have driven all the different brands Knight uses except the KW T680.

I have noticed most of the million milers at Knight choose the Kenworth. I almost did, simply because I like the way the interior is laid out. In the end, my practical self took over the decision process.

I am very comfortable with the Volvo's reliability. After a million miles, most of it in Volvos, I've had almost no mechanical issues. To me, that's important. I like knowing I can run confidently without unnecessary delays.

I love the tight turning radius of the Volvo, and their proprietary I-shift transmission is far above all the others in my opinion.

Here's an interesting point about truck maintenance... My terminal manager expressed how glad he was that I'd chosen a Volvo based on his internal company reports. He told me they have a lot less down time and maintenance expense with the Volvos compared with the other brands.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Congrats!!!

Volvos are gorgeous and great for teaming cause of the smooth ride. Prime puts so many alarms on trucks though that volvos wiring does not fair well. Ours are always in the shop.

Be safe and its gorgeous!

Beautiful ride. Love the color. Congrats once again. The turning radius on the volvos are amazing, and they do put power to the ground nicely. If you're used to the volvos, I have a hunch that the KW might not be a good fit, it has a noticeably longer turning radius and a lot longer nose swing when backing.

Well done sir...congratulations! I might be just at the start of my career in this industry, (with the same company as you I will add) but I can certainly recognize how special this achievement is. You are an inspiration for us newbies that this goal is achievable and within reach as long as you keep at it, drive safely and stay focused.

Here's to your next million miles...and beyond!
