My friend and I are taking over an existing trucking company with clean dot and mc number. We would like to use services such as coop by Ryder which enables users to rent trucks and deliver loads with them. Assuming I have my own driver and I need that truck for a day or two, will I need to have insurance under my own company that is valid for 2 days I need the truck to haul loads using my dot and mc or how will I make sure am fully covered for the two days.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Welcome,

Ryder and Penske both rent trucks. I don’t know their exact requirements, but a quick phone call to them will get you their specific requirements.

You will have to work through your insurance company and obtain a COI, certificate of insurance for the coverage they require.

Rental companies are getting alot more strigent on their requirements. IE: length of time in business, CSA score, credit check, etc.

Yesterday I setup a trailer rental for next week for a specific job and I’ve been a customer of the company for 2 years. My wife took care of all the details and told me the paperwork and requirements were way more stringent than when we bought a trailer from them.

Hope this helps.

CSA:

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle

Congratulations on taking over the trucking company! Yes, you'll need to have your own insurance coverage that is valid for the duration you're renting the truck, especially since you’ll be using your DOT and MC numbers. It's crucial to ensure that your insurance covers any operations during that time. You might want to contact your insurance provider to discuss temporary coverage options specifically for the rental period. This way, you'll be fully protected while hauling loads. Good luck with your new venture!
