Applying for the cdl training at swift, I have questions

I'm trying to apply for for the cdl training program at swift and I have some questions

I haven't worked since last September, but I've been putting in applications and only getting ignored, is this too long of an employment gap?

I had a speeding ticket in 2019 and paid it off. I've heard dmv removes these on your record after 3 years and 3 months, but swift wants the past 5 years of my driving records, will this ticket still show up?

Does a family history of truck driving count for anything?

I'd appreciate any answers to my questions.

Thanks.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Nicholas, how bad was the speeding ticket? (Speed limit and MPH over)

What date would 5 years be over?

Family history of driving is of no benefit to you as it relates to Swift. It might help you in CDL school if any of your relatives taught you anything useful.

It was February, 23 2019. Can't really remember how fast I was going over the limit. But I recently bought my driving records and it wasn't on there.

You should answer the question according to the exact wording of the question. In other words, if they ask if you received any tickets in the last 5 years, you have to answer honestly that you have. Pay close attention to the question asked and answer only that question.

The employment gap may be a problem at some companies. Be prepared to explain what you were doing during those times.

And no, the family driving history will have no impact on you getting hired.

As long as everything else checked out, you shouldn't have a problem getting hired somewhere. Keep after it.

And teucking companies see ererything... even back to 1978. And will see expunged DUIs despite how much someone pays to expunge them. Prime will often ask about really old tickets from over a decade ago, just to see how a driver reacts. Keep your cool if asked. And take responsibility. You made a mistake and wont do it again. Good luck

Thanks for the replies, if I recall correctly, the cop that stopped me only wrote down 10 mph over the limit. I did only pay the ticket this year.

Swift got back to me and said the ticket wasn't an issue. Barring any unforeseen circumstances I think I'm good. Not going to get my Hope's up until I passed my permit test and behind the wheel. Thanks for the replies.

I have one more concern. I used to be a daily pot smoker but I stopped in april. Either the 7th or the 15th, can't remember. Swift does hair follicle tests. Should I wait until the 90 day mark?

Would I fail if I took the test now?

This is the only roadblock to swift at the moment?

Should I just apply again in a few months when I know for sure I'm clean?

I really need this job and I put immature crap like weed smoking behind me but it might bite me in the butt right now.

Would they accept if I just say I can't do it at the moment, but can in a few months?

That sounded real good yesterday. It doesn't sound so good today...

Nicholas, we don't get judgemental here. We don't sugarcoat our help either. There's not a chance you'll pass a hair follicle test by just waiting 90 days from your daily habit. We've had people come in here claiming they waited nine months after stopping smoking and still failed the hair test.

People don't like my advice, but it always seems to work. My advice is to stay clean one year before going through an orientation which includes hair testing. The labs claim they only go back 90 days, but I've seen a lot of people fail who claim to be clean for much longer than that.

Individual people have different speeds at which they metabolize things like THC. You need to be smart about this. You could destroy any chance of getting into trucking by failing a drug test. Don't rush this. You can always get approved when you are more ready.

Crap. Ok , back to square one. I'll contact swift Tomorrow and tell them I can't do it now. My application was already approved so that sucks. Hopefully swift will allow me to apply at a later date.
