Need some advice! So i am a recent CDL grad, got my Class A CDL about 2 weeks ago. I have a criminal background from 12 years ago. That along with me being a new driver has made finding employment virtually impossible. I knew it would not be easy but didn't expect this. So May Trucking is one of the many I applied to because I knew they worked with recent grads and people with a criminal background. After some phone tag I finally was able to talk with them last week. Went over my application. My MVR and employment history is great. Talked about my background and was told it shouldn't be an issue. She said they would do a background check. She uploaded my MVR and CDLIS to driver pulse but nothing about a background. She called 2 days ago and said my application was approved and to message her to get an orientation date. I messaged her and she sent back that my orientation is set for January 2025. 6 MONTHS FROM NOW. She said that is the earliest they have available due to so many applicants. Not sure what to think here. Anyone hear of anything like this. Just trying to figure out if it's a real offer.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

MVR:

Motor Vehicle Record

An MVR is a report of your driving history, as reported from your state Department of Motor Vehicles. Information on this report may include Drivers License information, point history, violations, convictions, and license status on your driving record.

CDLIS:

The Commercial Driver’s License Information System (CDLIS) is a nationwide computer system that enables state driver licensing agencies (SDLAs) to ensure that each commercial driver has only one driver’s license and one complete driver record.

A drivers file will include their driving record as well as their medical certification status.

I've never heard of a company scheduling 6 months out. They will have to rerun all of your information 30 days or less prior to you starting to make sure there are no changes to MVR or back ground. Plus your CDL starts to get "stale"

Seems like a waste of time on their part as a lot can and will change.
