Hello. I have been reading this forum since 2017 but this is my first time posting. Many wonderful truckers on this site.

I am posting because my wife and I want to get back to OTR life. We both still have our CDL-A licenses. We have not driven a truck since December 2019. This time we are looking for something more specific than running randomly through the states. We want a route between the USA and Canada. If you have experience with this kind of route, can you point it out to a trucking company that has this kind of route, or just add your thoughts on the matter. Anything helps. Thank you!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Hello Taino. I’ve never crossed the border into Canada so I don’t know anything about it. But I did have some questions. Is it safe to assume you’re are USA citizens? I also assume that more Canadian trucking companies come south across the border than USA companies going north across the border. This assumption may not be accurate and someone might correct me if I’m wrong. I was just thinking it might be an advantage to get with a Canadian based company that goes back and forth. Bison trucking comes to mind.

I’m glad you posted this because it will be interesting to learn more about cross border trucking and how it works.
