Hello all, I'm writing to discuss a situation I'm dealing with that's really bad. I just got my cdl and well I tried to get with werner, being 6 months clean from using any substance i figured i was good to pass their drug tests. Well unfortunately i failed their hair test and was let go. But at the terminal the lady and the guy at the main terminal in Nebraska said that this was just going to go on my record as voluntary leave... Well unfortunately this was not the case,as they labeled it as involuntary. Now this has completely prevented me from finding any entry level jobs for some reason. I was not told by the school I went to (roadmaster) how serious hair test situation really is. It doesn't even mention that I was removed for failing a drug test it's just dismissed from training which could be anything really. I mailed a letter to appeal but I'm not really expecting anything. Anyone here can give me any advice? Even swift won't take me at this point. Is my career over before it started?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Hey Alan, it’s going to be a long tough road for you but not impossible. You are going to have to do the sap program. No other option if you want a chance. I personally know nothing about that program so you’ll have to look into it and get it going asap.

I do know at my previous company we had a driver fail a drug test. For what I’m not sure. But after completing the program, and an extended amount of time after that of him being off the road. The company was able to bring him back.

Maybe get in touch with Werner and ask about that.

SAP:

Substance Abuse Professional

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

You fell into a problem many have before you.

I’m not really clear the way you described this. Did Werner hire you or was this a drug test a school did??

Hair Foilcle tests are not DOT drug tests and not reported to the clearinghouse. Many companies use them as a pre employment test and that is reported on your DAC.

It is still a uphill battle but a SAP program is not required.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

Apply everywhere. You're looking for someone who doesn't check DAC. Usually mid to smaller companies and local. BUT your biggest issue is you have no experience. That is what is going to make it really hard.

It was at the werner terminal. These people at the terminal said that this wasn't going to show on my record it was supposed to show voluntary leave so I'd still be eligible for rehire. I mailed an appeal letter hoping for a miracle, it's up to them if I ever drive again. There are no small companies in Florida that i can find that are willing to train. EVERYONE requires at least 3 months but now dac labeled me as not eligible for rehire. I can't believe roadmaster is misinformed about the dac report situation. It shouldn't be across all companies anyway that's absurd. Anyone here recommend cr England? I read lots of horror stories about them maybe they would be desperate enough to take me? Or if anyone has any small company suggestions?

Alan, don’t worry about CR England as a company. If they will take you, go for it. We constantly tell aspiring drivers that they need to take whatever job is available to them regardless of the noise they hear on the internet. You just need to get started, gain some experience and then Maybe you can be more picky about who you drive for.

Sorry, this is going to come across as a witch... but here's the truth.

So you decided to enter an incredibly regulated industry when it comes to drug & alcohol use, and you relied on your spidey senses to "figure i was good to pass" instead of doing real research. When you tested positive you were ejected with cause... a serious cause... and you are upset that you feel lied to. You are shocked that it prevented you from getting a job "for some reason". Hmmm...

I normally tell people to.wait a year to prevent positive testing and this is why.

I was not told by the school I went to (roadmaster) how serious hair test situation really is.

Did you really need someone to tell you that failing a drug test could be a career ending situation? It is a drug test. That in itself should have told you it was serious. It is sooo serious, that the company performs two drug tests, one urine and one hair. That is how seriously drugs are taken into account. Also, despite weed being legal in your home state, it is not legal by federal law.... which regulates trucking.

It doesn't even mention that I was removed for failing a drug test it's just dismissed from training which could be anything really.

So you would rather be know as a drug user than anything else?you are lucky it doesnt say failed hair test, but even so... you still need to report it to any future employers when they ask if you failed a drug test.

Is my career over before it started?

Possibly. Take anything you can get. Stay clean permanently now. And you still probably wont pass a hair test, so try to avoid them.

My company does a pre-employment hair test and I did extensive research online before my first day. I even posted on here and Kearsey offered me some advice as she has with you. Listen to her. Wait one year minimum before taking the hair test. I actually waited over one year, one year and 2 months to be exact so I really had no worries. And in the end, there was no issue and my career is off to a great start.

Not sure if your career is over before it has started since you’ve already failed a hair test. This was why I did my research before my first day. I would have rather pushed out my orientation, which was an option, instead of risking it. I’m glad I waited the one year and 2 months. I wish you all the best in your endeavors.
