I ran a setup on a tanker that sounds like this. It had a control box and had an automatic and manual switch inside.
Manual mode would put the axle down and it stayed down.
Automatic mode it would raise if the weight of the trailer was under a certain amount while in motion and drop when parked.
Was a little strange to me at first. The biggest thing I noticied was it pivoted differently when turning empty.
We ran some lift axle flatbeds at Prime. Just let it do it's thing. It'll lower automatically when there's enough weight placed on it.
Yeah we had a bypass valve on it allowing us to keep the axle lowered, making the turning radius a little tighter, depending on where the weight was placed.

I’m part of a relay team and was just sent down a 48ft trailer with 2 axles. The front axle is a lift axle. I’ve never seen one on a 2 axle trailer. The way it’s set up now is when the trailer is in motion, the tire lifts up and once parked it drops down. We are mail carriers and typically run very light trailers. Can anyone shed any light on the best way to use this trailer? Thanks
