Hey all. So, WE sent me to pickup a delivery in Buffalo, NY at a place called Sonwil / General Mills. I get there and they are closed. Joy. So, I use my phone to get the nearest truck stop and then put that address in my Co-pilot on my tablet. It tells me to make a right on this street called Tifft Street and just after I make the turn.....I see huge concrete barriers blocking the entire width of the street about 300 feet ahead. Oh crap! It's just a 2 lane road, no shoulder, nowhere to turn in before the barriers. Actually, there was a small driveway off to my left and I thought about trying out a K turn, but there was a yellow pole on the left side and a gas pipeline on the right. After I saw that, I really didn't want to chance it.

The only thing I could think of was to call the police and ask for assistance. I told the dispatcher what road I was on and said there's concrete barriers blocking the entire road. The woman said, "Really? I wonder when they put that up." LOL! Anyway, I told her that I needed someone to block the road that I wanted to K turn onto and she was very nice and sent 2 cars out to me to block the road. The cops didn't even know about the barriers...jeez! After I backed up and made the turn, one of the cars came alongside me and I thanked them again and said someone should put a sign out and she she agreed.

Anyone else have to call the police for assistance? I kinda felt embarrassed at first, but I guess there was nothing else I could do

That's all for now. Everyone drive safely and I'll TTYL 👋

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Short answer: Yes. (I wrote a longer description of the situation but, it refused to post for some reason).

This post caught my attention being a local Buffalo driver. Weird that Tifft was closed, hate to ask, but you sure you were on the right street? A lot of Tifft down in the industrial area is four lane, and I know they have barriers on Laborer's Way. Plus, what truck stop were you headed for making that right onto Tifft, that's a bad way to get to Jim's. Might be time to upgrade your GPS.

Glad you made it out ok though.

Hi andhe78. TBH, I didn't see any street signs, so I'm not positive other than going by the GPS on my truck's tablet. I had made a left out of General Mills and then a right onto what the GPS said was Tifft. It was just after I made the turn I saw the barriers. And yes, I was heading to Jim's Truck Stop. Spent the night there.

Hi Kearsey. I did have a similar situation last week. Didn't post it here, but talked about it with bk on the phone. I had Googled a truck stop on my phone to spend the night and found a Pilot about 18 miles away. I put the address on my truck's tablet and started heading that way. I had just turned down a street that it told me to make a turn and right after I did that....I see an overpass with "13 ft. 4 in." on a sign. I sorta freaked out and wasn't sure what to do. I pulled over, put the 4 ways on and set my brakes. I got out and the only way I could see to avoid it was what appeared to be a thin alley off to the left. I walked down the alley and moved trash cans off to the side and although it was thin; about 2 inches of clearance on either side of my truck; I made it to the next street...thankfully!

You did the right thing calling the officers out to help you get out safely. They would rather do that than have to come out and handle a crash.

I’ve called several times in different places over the years. Mostly in FL.

So, basically your OOF-DA with TMC, prepared you for "stop, walk it over, decide on an option" rather than keep going! Progress!

Yep, luckily I only needed one officer to block, and we were both suitably impressed with my blind side alley dock to get out of it 😳 😂😭
