Hello Everyone,

I'm a recent graduate of my Class A License and I got a job interview for a job that I always wanted I used to work in the tree industry and was getting underpaid alot while taking trees off power-lines, I always wanted to work in the hazardous Industry and always seen this company "Clean Harbors" On the road all the time during my standby emergency calls .

I live in Central Connecticut, so finding high paying jobs with a CDL that involves environmental service work is difficult. Most of them are 30- hour away which is fine. Is the Commute worth it? I know it'll be amazing chance for my young self M(21) to get ahead and attend this interview and have a great living. This Job will pay 2.5x my old job literally. So Just wanted people opinions. I'm going from minimum wage to per diem , $2500 a week minimum postion.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Per Diem:

Getting paid per diem means getting a portion of your salary paid to you without taxes taken out. It's technically classified as a meal and expense reimbursement.

Truck drivers and others who travel for a living get large tax deductions for meal expenses. The Government set up per diem pay as a way to reimburse some of the taxes you pay with each paycheck instead of making you wait until tax filing season.

Getting per diem pay means a driver will get a larger paycheck each week but a smaller tax return at tax time.

We have a ton of information on our wiki page on per diem pay

$2500 guaranteed for a brand new driver? Sounds like a 1099? Which i would steer clear of. How much ttaining will you be getting?

Refining recycled oil, cleaning up hazardous waste spills, etc. hmm. Idk but my guess is they haul heavy loads most the time, because they’re often usually slower than we are lol. That’s my only knowledge of “Clean Harbors”. I agree with Kearsey. If it’s a 1099 position, don’t. You’ll want benefits, like vacation, holiday pay, health/medical/life insurance as well as income taxes being deducted from your paycheck and having workman’s comp protections.
