The road collapsed into the Pigeon River. The river is rising! Be sure to check alerts and divert around this area. Park it. I am in Effingham and 65mph gusts and heavy rains have been pummeling the midwest in addition to the hurricane terrorizing the south.

Current I40 West is closed at I77. There currently isn't any news of how long it will take to fix. In NC they are warning to not travel to Western NC.

Stay safe out there.

This is affecting people's lives. There are people still cut off from electric, clean water, gasoline and food. This is affecting trucking and the railroads.

I have some close friends in the impacted areas and things are very bad. One friend in southern Georgia said he's never seen it this bad and it might be weeks before they have power restored and there haven't been fuel deliveries (I believe he has back-up generators for his greenhouses, otherwise plants will cook).

I saw a link to this power outage map in an article which gives an idea of the extensive damage that has taken place. I think it's worse than this because at least one utility doesn't seem to be reporting (my Georgia friend's county is served by three utilities and one of them shows zero outages). Still gives a pretty good sense of things. Electrical Outage Map
