Hi everyone! I'm a researcher at Georgia Tech, and my team and I are exploring how truck drivers interact with ELDs and coaching/feedback practices. This survey is aimed at understanding what type of feedback drivers receive, the perceived quality of feedback, and incentives for good driving. This survey takes about 30 minutes and is anonymous. If you drive a truck, or know anyone that does, and you are able to fill out this survey, your feedback would be greatly appreciated! Click the link below to start the survey:

I have been driving for 9 years. I do not need, nor want, "coaching" by either AI or a dispatcher who has never driven a truck. It is extremely annoying. And although i love my company, i have indeed considered leaving because of it.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

This is 100 percent accurate.

Me ELD system, Motive has the safety stuff built into it. I honestly never think about it and in 2 1/2 years looked at it twice. I drive what I believe is safe for conditions present and I really don’t need a computer to tell me what I should or should not be doing.

I have a friend that his company has the same ELD system I have. He also has a person that calls him every time he has an event. The guy has never been in a truck. My friend has been driving trucks since 1973 and only been in 1 traffic collision and was hit by a merging driver and was not the at fault party. His biggest event is hard braking. When a stop light in any speed zone above 35 mph flips fast you have a choice to make. Run the yellow that may go red or stop as safe as possible. He like me chooses to stop. He is the only reason I have even looked at mine. I also have dings from the computer for hard braking. We both run alot of backroads and state highways.

Since you are at GA Tech maybe in your study you can find a way to encourage GA DOT to equip stop light controlled intersections with the light systems that flash and say prepare to stop. I have seen a couple in oconee county but that is it. MS has them all over and they are very helpfull for truck drivers.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

My ELD has a coaching thing on it. I have it muted and turned off. It's like having my wife on board. The last thing we need or want is "coaching" especially by people unqualified to do our job.

It's been found that car drivers were at fault in over 80 percent of semi truck vs car collisions. Start coaching the four wheelers.

One of the biggest issues with drivers is the large percentage of non US drivers who have come in via bypassed immigration polices through Canada work exchange. They have no concept of the culture of driving in the US, let alone operating large vehicles. They need coaching on learning English and following rules.

And moat importantly, contrary to what you been indoctrinated in school with, there is no drivers shortage. Never was. It's a myth propagated by large carriers, lobbying groups and retailers to keep the cost of labor low by keeping the available pool of potential drivers full. There is a lot of churn between companies, but for every load there's currently a bit over 7 drivers available.

I'm unsure of how to answer some of the questions. When asking about what kind of coaching I've received is the question referring to routine, required training like quarterly training videos...or is it referring to additional training/coaching aimed at correcting a pattern of bad habits recognized by the truck's camera and/or other safety features?

Yes, the questions are biased toward assuming the technology is useful and needed.

I would rather have the 360 degree cameras. And the suggestion of traffic light change warning above. That would be more useful than ticking me off... which is a distraction.

A good portion of the members of this forum have been driving for several years, and have been active on this forum for that same amount of time.

It would appear to me based on interactions I’ve seen on here, we all do our best to be safe out here in the road. We don’t need coaching or incentives to do so.

I doubt her will even read this or come back. He probably just posted for the survey. I welcome him to contact me for a true and in depth conversation.

Heck i could do a live on my YT channel and interview drivers 😁 he may not like the answers.
