I will testing for my CDL on next week, I have a few companies trying to get me on board, what will be a better choice, Werner, Schneider, McElroy, or Western. I do understand that I need to go out on the road for while to get experience before I can find something where I can be home with my family more. Just need help deciding which would be a good start up company. Thanks you all in advance.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Either whichever one will take you or which one fits you best. It will end up being what you make of it.

Must companies do one week of on the road earns you one day off home time. They can add up so three weeks out will get you three days with the fam.

When you request home time, your dispatcher will often arrange a route and time for you to stop at the house. (There might be certain rules about where you can park the truck.)

Also talk with your recruiter about various assignments you could take that get you home every week or even every day.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

What type of freight do you prefer to haul?? Makes a difference with the companies you listed.

Mcelroy is flatbed only. The others have 2-3 different divisions.

This is an employers market right now. They are pickey. I would recommend you take whoever offers you the job first.

PAM is another one to consider.

I got my start at Schneider, that was around 6 years ago but they had a great but fast pace training program. They were forgiving for all my rookie mistakes while I was there. So I can recommend them. But remember my experience is from 6 years ago, so I don’t know if things have changed since then.
