Hi, sorry if this is covered, still figuring out how to navigate this site. So I got my CDL A about six months ago. Had some things come up but finally looking to put it to use. So I'm looking for a good company to start with for a person with a criminal record. My felonies are 8 years old but I've had a recent simple assault which resulted in a fine. I really am trying to change, my driving record is perfect, but I have no experience other than my 160 hours at CDL school obv. I'm willing to go otr for however long and maybe even team driving. Also willing to do any type of trucking and get any endorsements I can. I just want the better paying one out of companies that may hire me while I get my year exp. Thank you for your time and help!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Unfortunately, all you can do is apply everywhere. You are in a position that is actually worse than not having your CDL at all. It's considered stale at this point.

Your history is also one that requires you to be ready for a whole lot of "No." All you need at this point is for someone to say yes.

For future readers, this is why we push company sponsored training. Once you are accepted to their training, they already have invested in your success. They have already run your background checks and know if you are disqualified by anything in your past. Once you pass the initial training, you have a job. (There are some statistically rare situations where you wouldn't. But that's very rare.)

Company Sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

Hi, I just noticed that I still have an account here.

I’m concerned that if the sponsored training doesn’t teach 18 sp that I would have the “no man trans” restriction on the cdl? Also, can I study for the cdl permit test on my own and get ALL endorsements?

I’m concerned that these company sponsored training is FAST PACED. And what can you bring inside the cab, and what about safety?

I figured that CDL A is better than driving a moving truck or a school bus.

I see many users on here with only a handful of posts, and then disappear.
