Improper Turning

I got my CDL in April and just started my 1st trucking job last week. Today I miss judged a turn and hit a pole with my trailer. I was trying to get experience so I can move out of this area and have a job. I know I’m new and yes, I learned from this mistake. Will I have to wait another year or 2 to find a job? I was hoping to have 6 years experience before I moved but now I have this ticket - improper turn. I love trucking and don’t want to be stuck.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Meant to say I’m trying to get 6 months experience, not 6 years in order to move out east and be able to land a job.

Welcome, We’ve all done stupid things in our careers. It’s not the end of the world unless you make it that way.

You say you hit a pole. That is generic in nature. Big difference if you rubbed a single utility pole without much on it, vs knocking a utility pole over with transformers on it.

You got a ticket so the police were involved. In our business crashes are either DOT reportable or not. If there was a death, injury, or tow away then its DOT reportable. It makes a difference to the carrier.

Did you get terminated?? If not stay put for 1 year and you should be ok. You will have to answer questions to any perspective employer regarding the facts of the crash. Be honest and own it and you will do better in their eyes.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
