Really struggling trying to find a trucking job with my past record. I graduated CDL school in October abs I applied to covenant, swift, Estes, TMC, Abiline and prime and all got shot down because of my record from 15 years ago. Have a reckless driving from almost 6 years ago, but since then I haven’t gotten any tickets. Is there anyone who will take me?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Send your application out everywhere is about all you can do. Check local listings and craigslist in your area. Even if you have to take a class B job for awhile it will be better than nothing.

Your climbing a huge hill with your past. Stay diligent in applying because the longer you go without getting on some where the worse your situation will get. Your CDL will be considered stale and that will compound the problem.

The past 3 years has been extremly tough in this industry, with many companies going out of business. Hiring has been slow and companies have generally got very picky who they hire. Alot of experienced drivers with spotless records are looking for jobs.

What’s probably holding you up more than anything is that reckless driving from 6 years ago and not so much the charges from 15 years ago. Then again, they involve theft in some kind of way and that’s usually a deal breaker for any company when they’re trusting you with their truck and load. Add on a reckless driving charge and the fact that the market is saturated with applicants and these companies are being way more picky and only taking the best ones, it’s going to be a long uphill battle. Reckless driving is usually an automatic thanks but no thanks. Try Western Express.

I think any of “the big three” (Swift, Werner, and Schneider) are gonna turn you away at the door.

I'm sorry for your situation, Jim. You called your training "CDL school". If that school was a community, technical college, you simply lost time and maybe a few bucks for tuition.

If you went to a private CDL school on the other hand, you are a victim of corporate greed. First, your criminal history is no reason to stop you from getting a CDL. The private company was happy to help you out, as long as you paid or financed several $thousand for tuition. "You pays your money, you gets to ride".

They might say they will help get you a job, and that works for most people. But you didn't hear till now about trying to get a trucking job with a serious record.

Despite the fact that you have seen the light and have washed away your past and want to now be a better person, your history will be staying with you.
