I'm looking to get my training done. I have a CDL but no experience, and wish I could find solo training, not team. I use a Cpap and its hard to sleep while the trucks in motion.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

Solo training isn't realistic. I think I have only heard of one company that you got training miles with a mentor right there in the passenger seat the whole time. Unfortunately the team driving model is how most training goes, and for good reason.

Team training allows the student to think it through themselves, but have the safety net of someone immediately available to assist. The whole point is to learn how to operate by yourself.

As for sleeping while the truck is in motion, that's just how it is. I am also a CPAP user, and that wasn't what made sleeping hard. What eventually worked was wireless headphones (that covered the whole ear) and Binaural sleep music.

Knight, and a few others absolutely do not team train. The trainer is in the passenger seat the entire time. After your shift, the trainer may drive a few hours, but generally not.

Their training peroid is 2 to 4 weeks depending on if you take their top gun class. They will take people with an existing cdl but no experience on a case by case basis, but I wouldn't expect it. Depends on how stale your cdl is.

CFI used to.. may still

Schneider does as far.as I know.

But as NaeNae said.. the teaming is more like having a safety net. We had a member years ago, i thought it was Robsteeler, not sure. But he insisted on going to Schneider for the trainer sitting in that seat. At the end of his first couple weeks, he regretted it. He struggled so badly his first months because training wasnt long enough.

Just leep that in mind. If someone remembers who that was, please let me know.
