Well everyone i posted on this site a couple months ago about my concerns. I have worked through everything and I am proud to say I am going to start my career! My planed start date is June 2nd with southwest truck driver training down here in Phoenix, Arizona. I have enough saved up to pay cash for school so thats why im doing a private school. I obviously dont post on here much but i do read through a lot of your topics. I love it! I am excited to start this new chapter in my life and thank you all for keeping this site great. My biggest concern for whatever reason back then was about what other people especially my family thought. My mom about had a heart attack when i told her i wanted to be a truck driver. But after awhile and once she and my father realized i really wanted to do this, I now have their full support. I am a young lad (I turn 23 in a week). so they probably thought i was giving up on life but now they seem actually really excited for me. I just got my 2 year degree and decided to take a break from school. I actually have a CDL (Class B) for my current job of driving a school bus. So once their school year is over (May 22nd) its off to truck driving school!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

That is great news Max - excited for you! I only wish I could've started at your age! Any companies catch your interest yet? I'm starting private school on Monday and am heavily leaning towards Crete.

Thats great Max!!!

I remember your post from before, glad to see you are following what you want to do instead of what other people think you should. Keep this mentality and your life will be much more enjoyable good-luck.gif

Thank you everyone! I am so excited to do this. Something I have been dreaming about since a young age and passing big rigs on the interstate.

The school im with is associated with Werner, Covenant, May and then a smaller OTR company called Eagle. I have applications in at all those places along with Knight. I also am actually going to call the recruiters at Prime, Schneider, and western express probably some time today and see what they have to say. This also may depend on one of my best friends is very close to pulling the trigger on trucking as well so we have talked about teaming. I have a perfect driving/employee/criminal/whatever other record companies what to look at so im good there. I have about a month or so to finalize everything so we will find out where i end up! The guide on this site is very helpful as far as figuring out a company and i obviously have companies i would rather go with over others but other then that im just excited to finally hit the road and work hard!

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

That's great Max, sounds like you're already privy to the fact that certain companies will only accept certain schools. Werner is on my short list. Crete / Shaffer is my #1, followed by Prime, Schneider, and Werner. I don't know about you, but I would spend hours looking at the different company profiles on Trucking Truth. Looking at company websites is something of a hobby too. I never thought I would've loved the idea of trucking so much, but it's growing and growing. Driving down to NC this past week and back up again really whetted my appetite!
