Hi all, in NJ there is no engine inspection at all. But was wondering if other states have the Engine Start and In-cabin inspections? After day 2, I find the engine start veerrry difficult....tooo many PSI figures to remember!!
No engine inspection? Wtf? How can you pass the mandatory Pre Trip Inspection that is the FMCSA regulation without pre tripping the engine compartment? That does not sound right.
Wondered about that, but its true!! Not unless its included in the other classes (we had to buy work gloves). Will find out soon!!
The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
What Does The FMCSA Do?
That's hard to believe liability or not that they won't open the hope so you can take your pre trip. Move to Texas there's no pre trip down here to get your lincense. You just have to pass air brakes and road test and that's it.
Believe it or not Logan is correct. The officers who used to go through the pre-trip with potential drivers kept complaining that it took too much of their time so the state finally switched to a computer test that merely requires you to identify specific parts on the truck which would be inspected during the pre-trip.
I didn't get a chance to speak w/ the director/owner last night, but if it is a school liability/policy, and not one for the State, I will see if I can sign a waiver to have the hood open for the test. I want to practice with the hood open, and take the test w/ the hood open. I think I'm entitled to that seeing that I laid out 5K for my education. I won't have an air of entitlement when I speak with the gentleman, but I will be forthcoming and direct.
Ok. Its true. Confirmed today. No open-hood inspection test in NJ. But after comparing the practice tests/flash cards on this website, I realize we have far more to identify in the pre-trip inspection. So the online pre-trip practice test wont help me in in way.
A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.
Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

I do think though that it will be in my best interests to study the open-hood pre-trip. So, I will go ahead study online. Thanks to Brett and all contributors.

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
