I hear ya Andrew! Ever since my first experience backing the rig, I've definitely gained a whole new level of respect for drivers, and for the truck! Call it a healthy intimidation!
It is a different world. Most people on the road do not realize that the truck beside them takes so many different skills to drive. They don't understand we can not stop on a dime. The amount of focus it takes to drive a rig is 100 times more than a car. You lose focus in a car for a second and you crush the rear bumper of somebodies car. You lose focus in a rig and someone dies. I have only been driving a short time. The other day I got distracted by something while pulling out of the truck stop. I was trying to toss a map book on the dash or something. Then I realized, I was not paying full attention to what I was doing. I was turning way too soon and had I not stopped and corrected my action, I would have taken down a utility pole. That 5 seconds it took for me to toss that map book on my dash could have been the rear axle rolling over someones car and crushing them. Remember, stay clam and get everything in it's place before you start to move. Minimize distractions so your focus remains on 5 millions things around your truck that you have to process every second.
