I have my cdl and worked for Stevens Transport for 7 months and did the lease thing but got tired of driving for free basically. I left Stevens 2 wks ago to help my mom out so she can put her place up for sale and move back to IND. and so am I, my problem is which company to go with Con Way or Carter Express. All trucking companies have pro 's and con's and I know it comes down to my needs and how they fit for what I want .There is alot of info out there and talking to recruiters they all talk the same but what are some of the key questions to ask and other questions that hardly ever come up that you don't think about.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Welcome Carmalita !!!! We are so glad you found TT.....and we will help you all we can... So let me give you kinda a list for figuring out who you want to drive for...... Where will you be living ?? you need a company that will get you thru there for home time....or atleast close. what kind of freight do you want to haul...LTL, flatbed, reefer , dry box... What kind of driving ....solo or team ?? what kind of truck ?? light weight or regular what kind of pay would you like ?? what kind of home time ??

Theres some questions you will need to ask yourself...then go from there....you are a premium product to a trucking company...never forget that. Women are preferred in trucking..they take better care of the equipment, make appointments, and don't park at the strip club....lol

Keep us posted...and come on back in and let us know what you are doing !!!!

Lady Driver Rock !!!!!

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

Reefer:

A refrigerated trailer.
