I'm very interested in hearing responses on this as I'm actually in the same boat. I currently have a pretty good office job as far as pay and benefits go, however, I hate my job with a passion and after doing tons of job searching, there just isn't any other good local jobs where I live as about 75% of the job opening here are trucking jobs which is what is making me look to trucking as a new career.
Charles, I'd look at your local Craigslist to get an idea of the local trucking jobs you can find. Most of them require a year's CDL driving experience.

Hello everyone, I've been putting a lot of thought into this and I'm considering leaving my current job for a career in truck driving. I've already passed general knowledge and air brakes. Next week I'm gonna take the combination vehicle and passenger endorsement test to get the CDL permit. The main problem though is that I already have a good career, I'm a correction officer and I have great benefits and pension but I hate the job. It takes me 2 hours to get to work and home from work because of the traffic, that combined with the stress of the job is making me consider leaving, but I won't leave unless I find something else good. So anyway, are there a lot of good trucking jobs that aren't long haul? And am I crazy for considering leaving my current job?
