If you don't have any money behind you right now - say $500 at least - I would try to get some before beginning any sort of CDL schooling. I've heard stories of people showing up broke and begging their way through school, scraping up change for meals and such but that's incredibly stressful and will certainly not make you any friends. That's not the way to do it. You want to give yourself every possible chance of succeeding and adding a pile of financial stress and starving half the time is not going to help.

CR England's offer isn't going to be taken off the table. They're not going anywhere. When you're ready to get your training started they'll be there and so will every other school in the country. So don't rush in if you're not ready right now. But if you are ready, then there's no reason not to go for it.

How much is the fee they're willing to waive? It can't be much - the out-of-pocket expenses at those schools are next to nothing.

CDL:

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Yeah I would make sure you have money before you leave. Don't short cuy yourself into a problem by being unprepared.

I FINALLY FINISHED THAT DANG LOGBOOK SECTION!!!!! IT'S ABOUT TIME, LOL...THAT JUST ABOUT WHOPPED ME, HA HA HA...

Logbook:

A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The driver records the amount of time spent driving, on-duty not driving, in the sleeper berth, or off duty. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.

CR, like Brett said isn't going anywhere. Definitely make sure you have money saved before you go. I went down to Centrals training and I had a good cushion of money, but believe me it goes quicker than you think. I've bought others lunch, and even groceries while I was in training, and it amazed me seeing how unfinancially prepared some were. I understand things happen, but if you are not in a "make money now" mode, then definitely save up some money. Trucking school is stressful enough to have to worry about, you don't want to have to think about what you will eat later on or who you will have to burrow money off of to buy food.

Also, take this into account for trucking schools. The hotel and transportation to a training yard are "free", anything else is completely on you. If you are in a two week training course like I was, you're going to want to have food for your stay and not eat out all the time. So you will probably go to Walmart or some grocery store. That's about $50-100.00 depending on what you buy. Then what if you need to do laundry while you're there? You'll probably have to pay for that too, so it will be at least $10.00 for that. What if you found out you forgot a jacket when you got there? Add another $20.00 to that. Those and other unforseen expenses can drain through the money you bring with you. It is definitely better to be prepared than unprepared. Just one less thing you have to worry about when you're down there.
