Hello, I have a questions... I live in Indiana, but I'm moving to Kinston, North Carolina at the end of June. I've started the process to attend RoadMaster school and class starts July 7th 2014. As soon as I get to NC I GUESS I need to go to the BMV and apply for NC OPERATORS? Or can I wait til I complete training? Also, would I be able to get my medical card while in Indiana and NC ACCEPT IT? I'm just trying to get a head start so I can focus on other things once I get my medical card and permit done?? What's the best course of action? Thanks in advance.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Bmv:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

To be safe, change your license as soon as you get there...then, when you go for your permit, and endorsements, there won't be any problems...Also, your DOT physical is good in any state...

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Seems like some states are different, so I would check with your school or call the BMV where you are moving to be sure. But pretty positive you will need a NC license before you get in the truck. I live in Indiana and a guy from Florida was in our school and had to get an Indiana license and permit for class.

As far as the medical card goes even if you get your physical completed now you are probably going to go through it a few more times before you start work. I had a physical to get my permit before I went to school. Then had to have another at the school, then again when I went to my first company. Just part of the process.

I would call North Carolina and see if they have any restrictions about getting your CDL after transferring your license into the state. States nowadays are passing legislation to prevent people from leaving the state to get training and then transferring their licenses back into the state. That has nothing to do with you, but your situation might put you in an odd position where you have to wait 60 days after transferring to get your CDL or something odd like that. I really don't know.

So call North Carolina and tell them your situation. Make sure there won't be any problems transferring your license into the state just before getting your CDL. And I would call more than one DMV office just in case you get someone with bad information the first time.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Yea. Once you move to a new state you only have a very short time to get you licence transfered to the new state (30 to 60 days) before you are driving illegal.

Guess i've been driving illegally for over a year. i didn't know i was supposed to transfer my license over. by the way, if i studied for my cdl in another state, would it matter which state my driver's license is currently at. from my understanding, i'll still have to transfer my cdl anyway. or is the cdl separate from the dl.

You will need to have your dl up to date and current when you start school.
