I just wanted to bump this up for all of the new folks like me. I'm in the process of using this thread to make flash cards and studying before I head to Prime and find this an awesome resource.

Check out our pre-trip inspection study guide. It has a ton of resources for ya, including a PDF version of this pre-trip inspection.

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

I tell many Swift Academy students about this PTI guide. I've been telling them to search the site for "Pretrip inspection my way must see Daniel B." I "know" it helps.

It was the printable version of this that helped me ace my PTI. Between this and the High Road Training program, over half of my training challenges were solved well before my first day of class.

(Sorry no linky thingy's, typing this on phone.)

I'll get there soon. Just started Brett's book finally. And that's off to a great start.

Yeah, brother, that PTI guide got printed and studied before I got to CRST and it got plenty of use here, too. Just passed PTI yesterday thanks to that printable version. Thanks much!

Hello TT! You're looking at yet another legendary thread done by me!

This is my Pre-Trip Inspection, done my way! This Pre-Trip is done on my truck and trailer. I physically took the pictures and edited them to my liking. These are not pictures taken off of Google. It is a complete Pre-Trip Inspection and features everything you'll need to know. I've been working on this for a long time and my hometime finally gave me the chance to finish it all up.

This is based off of Prime Inc.'s Pre-Trip Inspection procedure. Your companies Pre-Trip might vary slightly.

Here are our sections:

Engine Compartment

Drivers Door Fuel Area

Coupling System

Trailer (Please note in the type of suspension your trailer has)

Light Check

In-Cab Inspection and Brake Tests

You will absolutely have to do the Coupling System, Light Check, and In-Cab Inspection. Then they select for you to also do either the Engine Compartment, Drivers Door Fuel Area, or the Trailer. It could be either one. You will have a total of 4 sections that you must pass on your exam. So study extra-hard on those required sections.

As stated, these are solely based off of how I like to do the Pre-Trip. I give my personal opinions as well as some helpful tips.

Your Instructor's advice may vary. In the end, just do it the way your Instructor wants you to do it.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Been busy working the high road training(awesome stuff) and just finally got around to checking out and downloading Daniel B.s pretrip , incredible work putting that together fine sir, this will help me immensely as I think pretrip is my weak spot. Second weak spot is hazmat , gotta get to work on studying that too!

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations
