As I look into the possibility of becoming a trucker, I have a lot of questions. This seems like a great place to get them all answered! I have seen some things about having home time somewhere that isn't home. I guess I am wondering if when you have time off, if they can't get you home, do you just have to take off where you are? Thanks for all the help up to now and going forward!

You don't have to take home time at all I you choose not to. They will get you home for your home time if you request it. But can be late sometimes. I was supposed to go home this weekend. My DM asked me if I could wait till next weekend. I said sure it's ok with me. I'm new and just want to prove myself so it can get the good loads.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Yeah Billy, it's not like you have a certain home-time schedule and you just have to take it where ever you happen to be. Heck, you could work six months straight if you wanted to. The way it works is that you will put in a request with your driver manager or dispatcher for a certain day or weekend or what ever for a certain amount of time. You try to do this with enough advance notice so that they can start planning some loads for you that will move you toward your home-time destination. That advance notice time will vary from company to company.

And don't forget that you don't have to take that home-time at home. If you want to spend a few days in Savannah, GA acting like a tourist just let then know you'd like to take your home-time there.

With Swift I tell them the zipcode I want to be in and the day I want to be there and they have got me there everytime and on time. The general rule of thumb is to request to be home a day or two before a date you MUST be home by, at least for Swifties. You never know how the load is gonna play out.
