Hello all, I am a U.S. Marine on my last active duty tour, and I'm thinking about entering the trucking profession once I retire from the service.I am new to TruckingTruth.com and really appricate all the usefull resources avaliable on the site. I recently finished reading Brett's book as well as "Drive to Drive" by Bruce Outridge and, as I continue to research, I would like to present questions to the forum for discussion. So here are some initial questions:

1) What are your thoughts on SAGE truck driving school?

2)What are your thoughts about Werner military apprenticeship driver program?

3) I heard good things about Werner's Tractor Trailer training program, thoughts?

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Hi Dave! Welcome, and thank you for your service!

I don't know about Werner, that would be a good one for GuyJax. But, as Sage! I recently went to the one located in Rome, NY, and my wife and I were very impressed! What location of Sage are you looking at? One of the key things I like about them, is the one on one training in the truck. Also, at least in the Rome location, they try to keep the class sizes down so that everyone gets a better chance at learning. They will not move on to the next section until everyone is satisfied that they understand. Plus, they have lifetime job placement assistance. So you can walk in to, or call any location and get help finding your next driving job.

I currently work for Werner but have not heard of that program. I also run a team truck. I am very happy here. Excellent benefits and equipment. I get plenty of miles and get home when I am supposed to.

Not sure how the solo driver side of the company is but for teams I would highly recommend Werner.

Tarren,

Thank you!

That's good to hear about SAGE. After looking at several schools, they seem to be the only one that mentions how their program is driven by PTDI standards. I'm planning on relocating to PA upon retirement, and I'm looking at the SAGE school located in Lebanon, PA.

Dave, Just to throw a wrench into the works you could also look into prime's psd program. I know a lot of the drivers for prime are marines. Just another company to think about. Plus you could request to be dispatched out of the pittson , pa yard. Best of luck to you from an old doc.

PSD:

Prime Student Driver

Prime Inc has a CDL training program and the first phase is referred to as PSD. You'll get your permit and then 10,000 miles of on the road instruction.

The following is from Prime's website:

Prime’s PSD begins with you obtaining your CDL permit. Then you’ll go on the road with a certified CDL instructor for no less than 75 hours of one-on-one behind the wheel training. After training, you’ll return to Prime’s corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, for final CDL state testing and your CDL license.

Obtain CDL Permit / 4 Days

  • Enter program, study and test for Missouri CDL permit.
  • Start driving/training at Prime Training Center in Springfield, Missouri.
  • Work toward 40,000 training dispatched miles (minimum) with food allowance while without CDL (Food allowance is paid back with future earnings).

On-the-Road Instruction / 10,000 Miles

  • Train with experienced certified CDL instructor for 3-4 weeks in a real world environment.
  • Get 75 hours of behind-the-wheel time with one-on-one student/instructor ratio.
  • Earn 10,000 miles toward total 40,000 miles needed.

Welcome to TT and thank you for your service.

We just had a Werner recruiter come to the school yesterday. He gave a good presentation and specifically told me about the apprentice program as well as something I had not yet heard. First of all, there are a number of companies that offer the program so you won't be tied to one company to choose from. We did a thread a while back discussing the programs and options available for vets. You can check it out at one of the links: Companies with the Apprenticeship Program

Well as you already know, the apprentice program is really run through the VA and DOL. It is additional pay you get for one year on top of whatever the company is paying you. Now I am assuming you will have the Post 9/11 GI Bill and have 100% available. You will get $13, 891 during the year. Werner breaks it down here: Werner's Veteran Benefits

Here's the new part I just learned yesterday. If you attend a school and use VA benefits to pay for the school, Werner will PAY YOU BACK that money. However, the two stipulations are you get it $100 per month and only up to $6,000. So in the course of 5-6 years, you will get that money back. Still, an extra $100 per month is still a chunk of change and worth consideration.

Well keep doing your research so your decisions are well informed. good-luck.gif

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
