Way to go Peebles! Quuestion: How does Celadon handle out of state students, like myself? Does Indiana need any kind of proof of residency, as like in ALL other states do?

I am curious to find out how long it took them to get in touch with you after you applied? I am still waiting...

Have you called them? When you put in apps with a company you have to do follow up calls. If your waiting on them to contact you it can take 6 months.

Sorry G Man. Every state including Indiana and every trucking company will have you prove where you live. The main way is be a physical address on your driver license. It has to be listed with you home address or the place you call home. PO Boxes will not work either.

Well....technically that may not be completely true. I was researching the CDL program at Vincennes University (Indianapolis campus) so I was also checking into the Indiana DMV CDL and residency requirements.

Straight from their website: "A person who is enrolled as a student in a Commercial Driver License training school in Indiana and has a legal residence in another state, but is living in Indiana temporarily for the express purpose of truck driver training, is considered to be an Indiana resident."

Now the address part for the actual license. When I spoke with a person at the Indiana DMV they told me that if you presented proof of attending a CDL school and had a letter from competent authority stating the residence address where you were staying while attending training, that would suffice. So if the school used their address, while not technically your 'home', you could get your Indiana CDL and then return to your home state and change it over.

I believe Peebles is not from Indiana (but I could be mistaken) yet is attending the Celadon school in Indianapolis and already has her Indiana CDL permit. I would be curious to hear what she has to say on the process.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Yes. This is correct. You can use the schools address or a similar one while in school ,that is done all the time, but before or after school it has to be the address in your home state.

Okay here is what happened with me. I live in ky, and I am in school in Indy. I brought 2 pieces of mail post marked within the last 60 days, birth certificate, ss card, marrage certificate, and ,my ky operators license. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING OR YOU WILL BE SITTING AND WAITING WHILE EVERYONE IS PROGRESSING. My permit and Indiana license has my ky address on it. Crazy I know. Now this is imprortant listen carefully. Some states are not like ky. When i get back to ky with my Cdl's I can simply trainsfer them back, but some states like Illinois will make you take your CDL exam again. thats pretrip, backing, and road skills.
