Why though did the bus not pull over onto the shoulder itself instead of stopping in the middle of the highway? Sooner or later something like this is going to happen and someone will get killed.

I wonder the same thing as buses around here going down a major (four line) highway with a 65 MPH speed limit do the same thing and stop in the middle of the road. It seems they should make a law stating school buses must pull over to the side of the road to pick up and drop off children.

That bus should be over on the side IMO..... One thing I noticed if you take it frame by frame it would seem the lights on bus came on at the last second and the traffic coming the other way never slowed down....

I agree, it seems as though the stop lights came on when he opened the door but I failed to see any yellow lights at all.. Either way that was a large shoulder, bus should've pulled over there. As close to the child as possible.

Since I started driving I've noticed a lot of bad habits being done by other truckers. They make it hard for all of those who work hard at being safe and take pride in their work. This idiot has only reinforced people's negative opinon of truck drivers.

The guy was not paying attention. He was likely out on some highway in the middle of nowhere and was not expecting a bus to stop in the lane like that. He may have been talking on the phone or doing any number of things. Then he sees this at the last second so he swerves to the right, not thinking about the chance of hitting anyone on the shoulder.

Then after he makes it by he realizes that he is going to be fired and maybe end up in jail. So that is why he kept going. Yes that is a terrible thing to do, but it is not at all that unbelievable really.

I am not familiar with the exact rules involving school buses except that you stop when they got those lights going. Why though did the bus not pull over onto the shoulder itself instead of stopping in the middle of the highway? Sooner or later something like this is going to happen and someone will get killed.

Iowa just passed a law this year to that effect. In Iowa, a bus driver MUST drop the student off on the same side of the road as the students home. No more walking across the street.

You're right. I think the bus driver should be at fault some here not giving very much warning for the driver to know they were stopping. True he may have been going faster than he should but the bus driver also has a responsibility to warn others of when they are stopping. Also everyone is beating up on the driver for passing on the right, however, according to the state manuals THAT is exactly what he was supposed to do to avoid hitting the bus!

OK I am failing to grasp something that I am missing. Since the bus did stop , although in the road, I am assuming the bus driver used the brakes and in turn turned on the brake lights and IS the warning that the school bus was stopping. How about seeing a school bus in front of you that is full of kids and the driver should have automatically been cautious cause buses do stop to drop off kids but obviously the truck driver failed to watch for traffic that might be stopping in front of him. Hard to miss a big square bus that is planted right in the middle of the road but I guess that trucker did.

So the bus driver stopped in the middle of the road. They do that all over the country. Nothing says they cant. Besides that shoulder was not the wide. The bus could have fit on it but that would leave the bus driver having to get back out into traffic off the shoulder. We all saw how soon after the bus came completely to a stop the the Trucker came by. Had the bus tried to get over the Trucker would have slammed into the bus. Two lane road, as that one was, buses are allowed to stop in the roadway.

Sorry but the second and I mean the very second the door opened up the driver was there. Which means he was going to fast and since he obviously failed to see a bright yellow bus that was stopping in front of him good chance he was distracted by something in his truck. Sorry the bus driver was not in the wrong here. The truck driver was.
