Hello! my name is Gina and I wanted to thank everyone on this site-it has been sooooo helpful plus I'm glad to see I'm not alone with being confused on some subjects of trucking. I just passed my CDL class A about a month ago-yeah! I thought going through the course was stressful, now I am overwhelmed with where to start looking. My "problem" is I have a full time job (not trucking) however I want to do driving part time for now-get some time and experience under my belt. With being a rookie I don't want to be taken advantage of - alot of companies offer, or seem to offer good pay packages, no touch freight, sign on bonuses-I'm just trying to determine what is fact or fiction.

Thanks again! you ladies are great!

CDL:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

How did I miss this post ????? Its hard to get into trucking part time....nearly impossible for new drivers...and truly impossible, if you go thru a company school. Now if you hit it lucky, and go thru a community college cdl program, WIA program, that pays for your school, or pay for it yourself, then you get a clean cdl that you dont' have to pay back by driving for a company. THEN, if you are lucky, you can find a part time job thru a local company that would be willing to take on a new driver......its a slim chance, but I've seen it happen. I think I'd be talking to companies locally that might take you on if you get your cdl.....then you will know if its doable....keep us updated !!! And I apologize for missing this post....my bad. I've been so busy I don't know whether I've found a helmet,......or lost my motorcycle !!!
