Smoking should not be an issue as long as it's only cigarettes. And almost all companies have a no fire arm rule. It's not worth it. The issue is you can not be legal every where all the time.

Does not matter that you have a license. Almost all shipper and receiver have a no weapons policy on their property and that posting counts as the one warning they have to give so going on that property will land you in jail since you got your warning. Absolutely no firearms on DOT property and that includes scale houses or weight stations. And all trucking companies have signs posted no weapons on their properties so what it boils down to is if you carry a weapon in a truck you will at some point break the law by going someplace where it's illegal to have one.

Another issue that makes it not a good idea is while traveling the gun and ammo must be separated and can not be reached while in the passenger compartment. That's an impossible law to follow cause the only place you could possibly store them separately is in the side storage boxes which can be reach and open from inside the passenger compartment.

There is absolutely no reason to carry a firearm in a truck. In 16 years I have never felt I need to carry my 40mm in my truck and I have been to some strange places.

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Thank you very much sir. Ya i just wanted to hear from other truckers since i turned 18 and could acquire a permit my pistol has stayed on my hip even at home. I will remember to leave it home while im trucking. Again thanks for the info. Im a new member here and well not much experience driving semi besides 2 months. And nice thing is i wont have to worry about bothering a team mate which is the only other option coming out of the school is team drive or lease purchase solo. Plus allows me to put more back because i control how much i run not a team mate. Increase my pay cap and a chance to essentially run my own business.

That sir is the properganda that all lease companies tell new drivers and it's far from being true. While it's true you will make more money as a lease on but it's only about 3% more than a company driver. So if a company driver makes $100.00 you will make about $103.00. Not to mention you have no control over your loads. True you can pick to take a load or not but if you refuse a load then you go on the bottom on the list and wait for your truck number to work it's way back to the top of the list again and since you are in a certain part of the country it's a good bet the next load that is offered is the same exact one you turned down in the first place.

Just something to think about if you go the lease route.
