Here's my secret - tea.
Seriously, buy a 6$ box of Yogi Sleepytime Tea and you'll pass out no matter if you're tired or not. Whenever I know I have to night drive so I need to sleep during the day I drink that tea and I'm out within 30 minutes. Powerful, powerful stuff.
Skip the Lipton and Stash and anything under 4$. Those are cheap boxes of tea. You want the good stuff, Yogi is a great tea.

Heavy C, my schedule gets flip-flopped all the time. I blame it on myself, but, that's just the way I usually roll. I'm constantly looking for an opportunity to get a load delivered a day early because the more you can get accomplished the more you can get paid in this performance based job. Consequently I'm constantly flipping around from a night time driving to a day time driving schedule - call me crazy - call me greedy - I just like to get things done. Here's my three top tips for getting yourself to be able to go to sleep even if you're not quite ready.
Get some exercise - go out and take a vigorous walk, or do some push-ups, or jump rope - just do something that will get the blood pumping and the lungs heaving - it helps me. I take a nice walk almost everyday, even if it is just doing a bunch of laps around the truck stop parking lot.
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and sugar(stimulants).
Do not let Daniel B. have your phone number - he will call you just as you are dozing off at 3:00 in the afternoon so you can get up at midnight to start your night shift. His timing is uncanny!

That's last part made me chuckle...
I've also found that taking a melatonin supplement works wonders, in addition to the other suggestions. In the recent past I've flown long haul international cargo, driven truck, and currently fly overnight freight flights--all of which are occupations that will completely screw up the body's circadian rhythms. I've found that a melatonin supplement is the best at helping me get to sleep in those times when I need to sleep, but am not able to without any lingering grogginess when I wake.
Old School that was funny, lmao...... Daniel told me about the yogi tea, but haven't tried it yet. My schedule is also a lot of frequent flip flopping. I started reading a bit. No matter how interesting the book is, I'm out in 30 minutes or so. But when I find a walmart that is open when I go by, I'm picking up the tea...
We will be trying the tea very soon. I have a heck of a time sleeping during the day and my circadian rhythm is more like a circadian set of manacles. That sun goes down, I'm sleepy for at least two hours.

So I was wondering if anyone had any good tips on getting to sleep before you're ready? I have a hard time getting to sleep when my schedule gets me out before my usual time. I figured who better to ask then the kings (and queens) of strange sleep patterns.
