I just wanted to introduce myself here.. I am new and just now starting to research and find out what all the hype is about. I am a former sales woman and sick of the 9 to 5 and never getting outdoors. I have several family members that are truckers. I am a girl and can do it! I have raised horses and cattle and this is my next venture. Any advice would be gladly taken!

My advice is to read all of the info on this site. It is all incredibly helpful. Brett has a book that you can read (free) with tons of information about trucking in general. That's probably a good place to start. The blogs are great first hand experiences to check out. Information on schools and company sponsored training is in there if you need to learn about schooling. Then the cdl training course will get you setup and prepared for getting your cdl permit. Then of course this forum is great for questions and information. One thing I have NOT found on this site is b.s. Everyone is helpful and truthful.

Welcome and best of luck to you.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Company Sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

I watched this video on a Lady Trucker last night and she really made a point she said "I can make babies in a truck, I can cook in a truck, so why not be in a truck" I laughed so hard!

There will always be racists and sexists people in the world. You guys are just as capable of doing what any man can. Yeah, some stuff a man does a woman cant, but their are many things a man can't do that u can, having babies and going thru probably the worst pain imaginable eats the cake. Don't let anybody get you down. Its your life, your choice. Welcome to TT!

When I was a teen, and I wanted to drive tractor for a summer job, my dad told me that I can do any job that a man does, as long as I could do it as good or better than a man....I've lived by that advice, and it has served me well.
