Hello everyone,

Could anyone recommend a good quality school to get a class A CDL in southern New York (NYC suburbs)? I'm looking for a thorough school that also has job placement. I live in Peekskill (about 40 minutes north of New York City).

I currently have a class B CDL and about 6 years of driving a 26' box truck all over the country. I'm looking to upgrade to a class A. I would prefer local work where I would come home every night. Although, if I have to, I am willing to do OTR if I have to.

I'd appreciate any advise on this. Thank you in advance!

Harry

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Thanks for your feedback. Yes I checked them out, there are a few in the area. Just trying to get some direction as to which one is best suited to my needs. I'd prefer some training that is more in depth with experienced teachers. The place where I got my class B sort of just put me behind the wheel, took me to the road test and said good bye. I'd like get more in depth training like they give at vocational schools. SAGE seems to be one of these types of places but the closest location is too far from me, unless I drive out there on the weekends.

Are there any community colleges near you that offer CDL training?

Good idea... unfortunately there are none locally. There is one at a Boces at a community college in upstate New York, but it's too far. I'm thinking about going with an in house training with a company such as CR England. Still debating if this is the way to go.
