Thinking of jumping on the dollar general ship with either averitt or werner to get my feet wet in the trucking industry.

Any opinions of how these two companies compare to each other for the same job (delivering to dollar general...)

I was considering the Dollar General account with Werner before I went with JB Hunt. What I realized is that you have to do lots of unloading by hand and think about where you normally find the Dollar General stores, small strip malls or out in the middle of nowheresville and no room to get into/out of the parking lot easily. So if that is what you want, then I say go for it. I know when I was talking to Werner about this account, they are paying close to the high end of their pay scale because they can't get folks to run this account. When they do, they don't last long because of the facts I mentioned earlier.

This information was given to me by the recruiter, personal observation and talking to drivers that are working similar accounts.

Those accounts are great opportunities, but Ernie's right. You'd better have a stout back and not mind sweating. You also need to be a fairly organized person able to keep a lot of paperwork for different orders all on the same truck organized so that you don't accidentally get the stores different freight mixed up.

You will off-load by hand about two truck loads of boxes and crates per week - that's going to be close to 90,000 pounds of stuff per week that you will unload. It is good money and regular consistent home-time.

The Family Dollar account is why I wasn't interested in this either. I have also heard that there are no docks leading up to these stores so the load has to come off the trailer to the ground via ramp or something and not all of the trucks have those elevator-lifty-thingys on the back, waddya call-ems.

Not for me. I wanna' drive, not load and unload all day long but that's just me.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I don't mind the idea of unloading, with it mostly being rolltainers and such it seems to be doable. I kind of like the idea of regular breaks to do some physical activity. (lol, guess i am an oddball in that regard)

Both of the companies seem pretty solid, was just wondering if anyone thought one or the other was significantly better as a starter company?
