It's been 20 years since I drove a truck. My son now is all grown and husband can't drive and it's up to me to be bread winner. I want to get back into driven looking to find a company that I can do schooling and get paid when driving. I live in Missouri. Did drive for Prime . I need to make money not sure about getting back on horse. I love trucking and miss it. Anyone have ideals.

You should check out the section on Company Sponsored CDL training. There's a list of schools there with details.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

If you're already in Missouri, have you considered Prime's company-paid school? They're in Springfield. 1 year commitment, "free" CDL A. And if you're already considering them as a company anyhow, might be a great option to just go to their school. They offer one of the highest pay packages during training. $500 per week in the beginning few weeks of your training, $600 for the remaining.

If you drove for prime in the past, I would call them and see about getting back in as a rehire + training.

Do you still have your CDL or did it lapse over the 20 years? If you still have it, you could just be setup with training. Its worth a shot to check out.

I have just started driving for prime 2 weeks ago. Before I stated with them,I too hadn't driven since 2000. Because of the time off, before they would hire me I had to take an 80 hour cdl refresher course at a private school. (I kept my cdl the years I was not driving truck) It cost me 2300 for the refresher but prime is reimbursing me 1500 of that back, paid over 3 months. I'm getting 500 a week before taxes and need 40k miles before I'll be upgraded to solo driver.

With prime of you go company solo driver you'll have to drive a lightweight truck which paid 5c a mile more. Starting pay for refrigerated is 37c mile, so with lightweight it's 42c mile. I researched quite a few company's and prime had the best starting pay I found. But use the links here and research yourself of course.

All you have to do to get started driving again is fill out one application on a site that send you're app out to several companies at once and your phone will ring of the book within hours. You'll find links you need on this site if you haven't already. Good luck to you =)
