So I passed the written tests today and got my permit. I was asked if I had a medical card, and explained I do not. The permit is issued with a restriction that excludes me from driving any CMV that requires a medical card (basically, dump trucks around here). I explained that I would be getting a medical card at training in Missouri, and then transfer the license to NC once I get the CDL-A in Missouri. I was told that if that company (Prime) tells me to get a medical card before heading to Missouri so there are no problems with the permit, to get the medical card, bring it back, and they'll change the permit to remove the restrictions without having to retest.

I have a call in to my recruiter to find out what to do next. @lilrichie collins, it might be worth checking with whoever you are going to train with to see whether it makes a difference or just how to navigate this part.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

CMV:

Commercial Motor Vehicle

A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Is designed or used to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards

In my school they lied to me to take my drug test while I was in the process of doing school work so it depends on which school you go to mostly and you could probably search online for drug for the cost of the drug test

The recruiter called back, she was happy I passed the tests. No problem without the medical card, they handle that part when I get to school. @lilrichie, I would talk to whoever you're planning to go with to get more info on their process, but you can definitely take the written tests in NC without a medical card.
