hey guys.. needing your sage advice.... i'm planning on going to a company training (currently prime is at the top of the list)... there is a company here in town that will get you a cdl in 2 days for $450... now i know a 2 day cdl does not a truck driver make, but BEFORE i go to prime or wherever would it be worthwhile to have the CDL? more specifically, $450 worthwhile? your input is appreciated

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Keep that $450.00. You'll get your CDL at Prime, and if anything, it might be worth getting your permit ahead of time - just not pay $450 for a CDL. Plus, getting a CDL in 2 days seems kind of shady. Most schools have 4 week programs - for a reason. Besides, not sure if you know this or not, but most companies require around 170 hours from a school. So in case you were possibly considering getting your CDL at that 2 day school and then trying to hire on w/ a company as a new student driver, it wouldn't happen. No way you're getting anywhere close to 170 hours in two days!

Have you asked a Prime recruiter whether they'd prefer if you get your permit ahead of time? I think they might be one of those companies that either requires it, or at least strongly suggests it. But don't take my word on that. More importantly, is that most company-paid schools operate at a breakneck speed, so any head start you can get before going is recommended. Study the High Road Training Program on this website. Try to get your permit. But, I would definitely stay away from a school that claims a CDL in two days, keep your $450 for road money during company training. smile.gif

Yes... no quicky CDL's..... Prime is one of the best for acquiring one, and you'll be learning what the company that is hiring you on wants you to know.

Good Luck!!
