I'm contemplating going the private school route to gather my CDL A. That way I can just go straight to the companies I want to drive for and sign on.

Has anyone heard of a consistently well talked about school in the Nashville area?

I have heard of 3 in the Murfreesboro area, but have not gathered any names yet.

The process starts today.

Grazie

CDL:

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

As i think you already know i'm attending united truck driving school starting two weeks. They have a wall of graduate with honors pictures, and pictures of people placed in jobs with their new trucks. I've also been there several times to meet truckers that graduated from there. If nothing else it's reputable and it's proximity to me is close. Also, if you go there with a permit already, the classroom week is replaced by more truck driving so you still receive 180 hours of training.

I know their are more in the area but i pretty much went with the closest one that reached a minimum standard. When i was doing my research i found a few in franklin that would be probably be closer for you, but i didn't get in touch with them or anything and i can't seem to find them again. Either way here's a link to my schools site.

My first visit to explore the place i met with the recruiting lady, the owner, placement assistance, met half the teachers, and got to explore a truck. I also got to see a mechanic covered eyes to toes in grease.

If you're willing to drive that far you can either wait until i get started there and i can give you more info or get started on the 25th and we can go together smile.gif

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

I went to the Truck Driving Institute (TDI) and they were awesome. They are in Murfreesboro off Interstate 24 exit 89 I believe. Good people with a ton of knowledge and a great program. Chances are if you apply yourself, you will have several job offers before you leave. I graduated and a week later I was starting with Averitt (I held out). Good luck to ya!

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

I'm driving from smyrna. So united is a little bit closer and involves less driving all the way through murfreesboro which is a serious pain with the construction right now. I have a feeling that TDI is probably the nicer looking of the two, i'd recommend calling both and scheduling a visit. If you make it obvious that you're pitting them against each other to the recruiters they may offer you special deals.

United normal requires 1.5k upfront for in-house financing and i happened to catch them at a time when it was a 1k special. If it meant the difference between getting a student or not i'm sure either one of them would be willing to work with you a bit more.

Whoa. I needed $200 to get started with TDI. 100 of that was hotel (I stayed during the week). The rest was financed.

I guess what I'm really asking is what is the total $$ of each program....

I will find out soon enough when I am contacted over the coming week... just looking for a heads up.

The company sponsored courses are around the $3k figure consistently. I would assume it would be a bit more than that.

TDI is getting the edge, right now... 1. lower up front $$ 2. lodging assistance - Lose that 100 mile RT commute a day. 3. More carriers on board. 4. In business since 1973 and has expanded to 12 locations. ( they are doing something right ) 5. ?
