My Truck Got Hit

Really just wanted to vent for a minute. I was parked at a truck stop in Virginia last night and was already in the sleeper. I woke up to my truck shaking and a sound like nails on a chalkboard

My right front fender got hit by a truck trying to back into the spot directly across from me. I was in the last parking spot in the aisle, and he was basically trying to do an offset.

It didn't bother me that I was hit, but he didn't stop. The awful noise was my fender mirror scraping his trailer. He ran at least 30 feet of his trailer down my truck before he finally stopped.

Even that wouldn't have upset me too much. But during the time we spent exchanging information, he didn't seem like he cared at all.

Anyway, not much point to this. Just wanted to share. Stay safe everyone.

Hey Benjamin, you certainly didn't do anything wrong here, but I just wanted to respond not only for your benefit, but also other newbies that might come across this thread. When you come into a truck stop looking for a parking spot and it is real full, you will often times discover that no one has parked in that "end spot". There is a reason for that, and you just stumbled upon it by accident. There are some things that you just learn the hard way, and that spot is one of the most likely ones to get your truck clipped. It is usually an easy spot to park in so a lot of rookies will take it, but you will find very few seasoned guys taking that spot if they can avoid it.

There is always the chance of getting scraped or bumped late at night in the truck stops, in fact I see the most accidents at the truck stops instead of out there on the highways. At least they are low speed accidents and therefore not as dangerous, but they can still do some serious damage to the trucks.

Wow, that sucks man, super sorry to hear that! I suppose that's part of the game we look forward to... Did he appear to be a veteran driver? I would have to guess he was. I'm like you, i would be incredibly upset if someone damaged my truck, however, as I've read so many stories here on trucking truth, Sh*t happens... While i do share your dismay over it, at least it was small compared to what it could be, and also a great lesson for you.. Key phrase time lol GOAL!! Thanks for sharing, I'm starting school next week, it's a reminder for me that No matter what, poop happens....ha

I had a truck back in to me at the Pilot in Staunton, VA. I woke up to the truck rocking. By the time I could get out, he had already headed to the other side of the lot to find another space. Luckily, some other drivers pointed him out. I had to walk over and "remind" him that he had backed in to me. He did not seem to worried about it. I bet if I had of hit his truck he would have been furious!

Wow he tried to hit and run. Hope he paid for it.

Sorry to here about your incident. What Old School said it very true - those end spots are nasty spots that are frequent hits. That hit and run stuff seems to come with the territory. When I got tagged, the guy did everything except cry to try and keep me from reporting it. Even the Sheriff deputy got irritated with the guy! I know a lot of people will leave a space if they can between them and another truck. I was told early on, park next to someone if you can. It reduces your chances of getting tagged by 50%.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

Thanks for the responses. Old School, you are right. I learned my lesson about the end spot. Tonight I am happily tucked between two other trucks.

To Andrew, the driver said it was his third day solo. I think that's what surprised me about his attitude. He was more upset that he had to do paperwork than he was about hitting me.

My truck has a decent scratch in the front and the fender mirror was bent some. His trailer was really messed up though. It had a huge dent in the back where he made contact with my fender. And it had 4 scratches about 30 feet long down the side where he scraped it along my mirror. I was upset about the damage to my truck, but at least I don't have to pull that trailer.

I would have called the Cops and made them send out DOT but that's me. I'm always willing to lend a helping hand to a fellow driver but not to bad irresponsible ones.

I just got hit too but its from the other trailer backing up to my trailer which is not a big deal because its just like bumping a dock. I really don't mind it for the most part but I don't understand how people misjudge the distance but I really hate it when they do it in the middle of the night or when I'm sleeping.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
