Yes. Always focus on your reference no matter if it to your left or right. The other day,I had to focus on a truck because there was no lines.
It should say if it is to your left or right.
I agree. Right now i driva a 24ft box truck and drive a local route. Majority of my stops have no lines so i always find something as a marker.sometimes its as simple as the bumpers or tire tracks... fins something as a guide when backing. It helps tremendously!

Best advice I can give you is turn towards trouble. If you notice more of the trailer in your left mirror turn alittle to your left and if you notice to much in you right mirror turn right. It will keep you straight. Remember small movement on your wheel make big movement with your trailer. Less really is more.
Great advice, Redgator !!!! and yes...the biggest problem with backing is over correcting when you move the steering wheel...AND slow and steady.....
