Day 5 of Phase II

I have a little down time at a Shipper so I thought I would catch up. We swung by the Gary, IN terminal. They did a good job with the renovations up there. We had a nice comfortable lay over and now we are on the way to St. Louis when we get loaded.

My down shifting is coming along nicely. I need to work on my sign reading more as I keep missing important ones. I always seem to miss one while I'm checking my mirrors, so I have come up with a plan to only check mirrors when there are NO SIGNS !! lol ....

There is so much to learn out here. I feel I am just scratching the surface....

Will try to drop another note from St. Louis : smile.gif

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

I'm sitting here at my desk, at home, in Tennessee with a 2014 International Pro-Star sitting in the driveway. The journey to this point has been harrowing at best, including getting sick during phase II. I'm working on getting the truck stocked up and gathering all the little tools necessary to survive and get the job done out on the road. I gave my Fleet Manager Wednesday as my first available date.

I rolled in at noon on Thursday and am just now starting to get my mental and physical strength back. This has been an amazing stressful and difficult journey so far. But now, I am on my own so I can pace myself as necessary and start building the real world data base of knowledge.

I will check in again from the road.

OK. Let's get this new career started.

Fleet Manager:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

OWI:

Way to go AJ!!! I am with my trainer right now waiting on what was supposed to be a drop and hook but looks like we will be sitting for 3.5 more hours until the GP office opens at 6pm. We are in Elwood IL heading to Pittsburgh PA. I can't wait to hear how things go for you. Be safe!!!good-luck.gif

Drop And Hook:

Drop and hook means the driver will drop one trailer and hook to another one.

In order to speed up the pickup and delivery process a driver may be instructed to drop their empty trailer and hook to one that is already loaded, or drop their loaded trailer and hook to one that is already empty. That way the driver will not have to wait for a trailer to be loaded or unloaded.

red Roehl truck in garage with hood up

Finally recovering enough to start communicating again. Not much time now. Back on duty at 0700 after a great Christmas break. I was able to heal a nagging sinus infection that persisted for a month - ever since Roehl Phase II.

Able to finally start looking forward, instead of simply surviving each day. More details on the adventure to come when I hit the road for my second launch ...
