I am going to start in Laredo, TX on the 8th of September 2014.

Celadon is a good company and their training is good too. You just need to be willing to drive team for a while. If you get a good partner, you will enjoy this year of team driving. Having a good attitude is a key factor of success.

Please, contact Holly Harrison: hharrison@celadontrucking.com

She may help you.

OK thanks, I'm going to get a bus ticket to Indianapolis tomorrow. I heard or read a lot of horror story's about time it takes there an for now I'm going to assume its more the trainee than the school. Everyone progresses different. I can handle the test & the truck from moving them on the yard. So maybe things will go on schedule.

It is a self-paced training program. You decide how much you need. The minimum is three weeks. If you struggle, you have more time to continue training and if you are a quick learner you will pass the CDL tests after three weeks. In the end, it depends on the attitude of the trainee and how much time he or she needs.

They pay all the meals and accommodation. Therefore, you won't spend too much during the training. They may not pay you, but they reduce your costs. At Stevens Transportation, you would spend for food etc out of your own pocket. You would spend more money at Stevens Transportation.

Celadon will pamper you with three free meals a day during the week and during the weekends. The only money you need to spend is for laundry etc. You will have a gym etc.

Will you attend their school in Indinanapolis or in Alabama?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Stevens Transportation would be fast-paced and if you don't progress quick enough, you will be sent home.

Celadon gives you more time and they let you train according to your own pace. At Stevens they will hassle you and they don't give you much time to progress in case you need more time.

What is better to relax and to take time or to be in a hurry and under time pressure all the time?

At Celadon you will be on vacation and they give you free meals until you pass the CDL test. If you stay for three months, they pamper and feed you for that period of time.

It is more organized since 2011. They have been improving. In Laredo, I will be in a hotel. There are no dorms in Laredo, TX. I expect Laredo to be a bit calmer than Indianapolis, because only Texans will train their and therefore there will probably be less students.

Most people want to train in the summer. You may not have as many students in your class because it is already fall and the first team driving after the training will be in winter. I will start my career in winter. The less students the better for you.

They used to have a $50 gift card for every new student. However, trainees used such gift cards to purchase beer and drugs. Now, they stopped this. Whatever a company does good there will be people who abuse that and other have to pay the price because such benefits will be stopped.

Double Clutch:

To engage and then disengage the clutch twice for every gear change.

When double clutching you will push in the clutch, take the gearshift out of gear, release the clutch, press the clutch in again, shift the gearshift into the next gear, then release the clutch.

This is done on standard transmissions which do not have synchronizers in them, like those found in almost all Class A trucks.

I think that if you go there prepared then you will finish in three weeks. I know drivers who finished quickly.

On the range there will be 5 levels which you complete. The first is for total beginners. Trainers will be with you in the first three levels, but on level 4 and 5 your practice for the CDL test. If you pass the first levels quickly, you will get to the last levels faster and I assume there will be less students, because usually the masses are struggling. In these levels, you just practice by yourself until you feel comfortable for the CDL test at the DMV. I am talking about backing.

I think in Laredo the procedure might be a little different, because of less students. However, that's just an assumption.

Try to do it right the first time.

If you took all your written exams before attending the school that would have been an advantage. However, you are from a different state (OH) and I don't know if IN has different requirements to get the permit.

I decided to take the tests at school because they pay for all the tests including all endorsements.

This review is from May 2014.

Many students who take months to finish the school just want to abuse their systems and have everything for free and be on vacation. However, if the instructor realize that you progress then they give you time, but if you don't progress even one bit then they might send you home. I am sure that the pampering will be stopped someday because pseudo-students use/abuse their system.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
