The cdl school I am looking at going to only offers full time classes right now that take 4 weeks to complete. Would it be a bad idea to quit my job to attend school. I have more than enough money saved to pay for the school and to support myself for probably 4 to 5 months before I would need to get a job. I am mostly concerned about what trucking companies will have to say about me being unemployed for a few months.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I should mention that I am not married nor do I have any kids and that I don't have any big bills.

Kylan, you want to time your schooling so that you are ready to start working as soon as you finish school. If you wait a few months it can cause you some problems.

As far as not working while attending school that is no problem. You simply show that during that four weeks you were attending truck driving school. That is standard procedure and perfectly acceptable to account for that time period.

If you have a lengthy void of time after schooling some companies will consider it as too much time out of the truck (usually around three months) and their insurance company won't allow them to hire you.

I don't think being in school and unemployed is an issue as you can document what you were doing for that period of time. Good luck!

I plan on going trucking as soon as i finish school. The few months after the school I am referring to, would be trying to find a job. But from what I have read and research I have done, it wont be much of a problem finding a job. But I know some companies won't hire me for whatever reason.

And that is why we are here.... To deal with that whatever reason they won't hire you. If there is something In your past that might be a problem then we need to know so we can give the correct advice

But if it's a "catch all" what if defeatist type of whatever reason then that can only cause you harm in the long run. You have to be confident in yourself and your resolve to be a truck driver. This is something you really have to want.

So as long as there is no REAL reason for a denial then you should be OK but if there is an issue we need to know which direction to point you in.

I was unemployed for 6 months after i left the software business and it wasnt really an issue. Only one company needed a letter stating the reason for the unemployment, which was kllm. All i had to do was explain that i was in the middle of a career change and took a few months off before going to real estate school. They called a friend of mine and my fiance to confirm the dates of unemployment. Granted, that unemployment was 2 years ago from oct 1 2012 to April 1 2013 but, regardless, it wasnt much of an issue. I think it's more of a problem for those that are out of work for many years and are trying to get into trucking without having a recent work history. Just be honest to them and it shouldnt be an issue

You should be fine on the umemployment issue. I retired and did nothing for a year before going to cdl school. It was company sponsored. I filled out a piece of paper with the reason and dates and 2 references. No issue
