Hey, I posted this in the Ladies section, but want to say hi to the guys too!

I love this site and really appreciate all the info and support here! My name is Trish and I'm studying for my CDL now (thanks Brett for The High Road!) ... just signed up with Stevens Transport for school in Denver in October. Still not 100% sure about this decision but the more I learn about this career and talk to people, the more excited I get. I'm 47, newly "single" again and loving it ... looking forward to getting paid to see this beautiful country. Just wanted to say hi and thanks for the community on this site!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hi Trish and welcome!

Denver huh? My little ones live in Colorado Springs with their mama. I will be surprising them with a visit later this week.

Anyway, have fun in school easing through it thanks to the High Road.

Wow, thanks for the big welcome! (I was off line for a couple days, sorry to take so long answering!) Yes, I'm totally excited! I've been staying with a friend and I can see I-25 from her house ... I watch the trucks go by and imagine driving one of them! It's good to hear Stevens has a good rep. Knight was my first choice but they haven't returned my calls ... so I'm going to go with the idea that I'm meant to be with Stevens.

Please keep us up to date on Stevens. There are on my consideration list along with Roehl and US Xpress. Where I live, Stevens does a lot of regional stuff.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

It's a cool place to live and would be cool to call my "home base" were I OTR.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Welcome aboard Trish!

Hey, don't wait on companies to call you. Call them and be persistent about it. Believe me, they won't look at you as a pest. Recruiters get paid a commission of sorts at most companies so they're looking for the most likely candidates. If you show them you're really serious about getting your career going they'll be more willing to work with you. Otherwise your application might just sit on a pile collecting dust.
